Category Details · Fantasy
This category includes stories shaped by magic, myth, or other supernatural elements. Settings may be entirely imagined or rooted in the real world, ranging from secondary worlds and distant planets to familiar places transformed by fantastical forces.
While traditional fantasy often draws on medieval-inspired settings with elements such as knights, wizards, and dragons, entries may also be set in contemporary, historical, or future contexts. What unites the category is the presence of imaginative worlds or rules beyond the ordinary.
This category accepts fiction submissions only.

If Fantasy Prizes Are Not Won
When a short story is not selected, it's often because there was plenty of outstanding competition in the category. Winners of the Next Generation Short Story Awards really are the cream of the crop.
Other times, a story may not be chosen because it didn't fit the category as well as it should. Still other times, more editing may help.
Resubmitting to Our Fantasy Contest
If you've entered a story in a previous Next Generation Short Story Awards competition, and would like to resubmit it in the following year, you may do so only by submitting it in a category different from the one(s) previously submitted in.
